An Art Deco make-up compact with an ormolu brass and glass jeweled lid produced during the 1920s by Apollo Studios over a Cambridge Glass amber compartmentalized base, designed around 1926, as referenced in Bedroom and Bathroom Glassware of the Depression years by Whitmyer,p 68-69. The intricately crafted Apollo lid is made from ormalu, the popular golden brass of the late 19th Century through the 1930s. Intricate scroll work and flora are embossed on the lid, which is further adorned with symmetrically set red, blue, green and yellow glass jewels set in raised scrolled filigree scrolls and florals, with the sides embossed with symmetrical floral frieze designs . All this elaborate decoration is centered by a domed brass finial, with a simple geometric pattern. The lid is marked on the inside : Apollo Made in the USA 2954. The amber heavy Depression glass Cambridge base has four compartments for rouge, powder & puff, eyebrow pencil and lipstick. Measuring 8 3/4 inches long x 4 3/4 inches wide x 3 1/2 inches tall to top of the finial. There is very light wear to the patina, primarily with dust in the filigree. The overall condition is excellent, with no damage or loss of jewels or filigree. A beautiful piece combining the ornate metal skill of Apollo Studios with the glass craftsmanship of Cambridge.
